1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut Marathon
1/2 Sauer 1/2 Kraut is a German-themed summer running event held in Pennypack Park, Philadelphia. The course follows the paved bike path along Pennypack Creek and passes through sections with no traffic and few visible houses. The midsection includes short, steep rolling hills and a trail segment known as Mount Cuckoo that some describe as the "Achterbahn" or rollercoaster.
The event offers multiple distances:
- 10 KM: Out-and-back on the Pennypack Park course.
- 13.1M: One lap, about 80% paved and 20% trail.
- 26.2M: Two laps including Mount Cuckoo twice; a 6.5 hour time limit.
The start and finish location is the Ed Kelly Amphitheater at the corner of Welsh Road and Cresco Ave. Race-day packet pickup is at the same location. Entries have early and regular pricing tiers that change after April 30. Refunds and deferrals are processed up to 30 days before race day with a $10 processing fee; no refunds or deferrals are issued after that deadline.
Post-race activities take place at the Ed Kelly Amphitheater and include a popup beer garden with bratwurst and beer, live music, a German dance group, an award ceremony, a costume contest, and unique German-themed awards and finisher swag.
