Göteborgsvarvet
Göteborgsvarvet is an annual running event in Gothenburg, recognized as the world's largest half marathon. The main race covers a distance of 21 kilometers through the city. The course takes participants through the Slottsskogen park, along the docks of Hisingen, and past the Avenyn boulevard. The event features approximately 50 music stations and various activities along the route, with a significant public audience present.
The event includes a variety of different races and activities during the week:
- Göteborgsvarvet 21k: The classic half marathon distance.
- Cityvarvet: A 4.3 kilometer race starting at Götaplatsen and finishing at Slottsskogsvallen.
- Stafettvarvet: A relay race where four runners each complete a section through Slottsskogen.
- Specialvarvet: A race adapted for individuals with disabilities, offering distances of 2.4 kilometers or 1.4 kilometers.
- Lilla Varvet: A race for children and youth aged 7-13 through Slottsskogen.
- Minivarvet: A 210 meter course for children aged 0-6.
- Varvetmilen: A 10 kilometer race.
Participants are placed into starting groups based on their pace to ensure a smooth flow along the course. The event also includes the Göteborgsvarvet Expo, a meeting place and trade fair. The race is organized by the Gothenburg Athletics Federation, and the surplus from the event supports local athletic activities and the training facility Friidrottens Hus.
