Event Overview
The Woodpecker Six is a timed endurance event held in Pinicon Ridge Park, a 966-acre wooded area in Central City, Iowa. This event follows a 6 hour format where participants aim to complete as many laps as possible within the designated time frame. Runners and walkers can complete the distance of their choice, ranging from short distances to potential half-marathons, marathons, or ultramarathons.
Course Details
The race takes place on a trail loop approximately 1.2 miles long. The course features two significant climbs with multiple stairs and offers roughly 215 feet of elevation gain per loop. To provide variety, the running direction on the trail changes every two hours.
Amenities and Facilities
The event is headquartered at Woodpecker Lodge, which provides a heated indoor space for participant drop bags. Runners also have the option to set up personal canopies or staging areas in the space outside the lodge. An aid station at the start and finish line serves hot food along with both warm and cold beverages.
Participation and Awards
Participants receive a long-sleeve race shirt, provided they register by the specified deadline in late October. Runners who successfully complete 24 loops or more receive special awards. The event proceeds are donated to Pinicon Ridge Park for future trail improvements.
Guidelines
The race is held regardless of weather conditions, including rain or snow. For safety and course considerations, pets and strollers are not permitted on the trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
