Wansfell - Ambleside AC (27 December 2025)
The Wansfell race in Ambleside is listed for Saturday 27th December 2025. The course distance is 3.14 km / 2.1 m with a climb of 405 m / 1329 ft. The race starts at the bottom of Stock Ghyll Lane (behind the Salutation Hotel) and finishes at the layby by Force Cafe (formerly the old Kelsick school). Prize giving takes place at Force Cafe.
Course, kit and safety
The route is an out-and-back. It begins on a tarmacked road up Stock Ghyll Lane to a fell gate/stile, continues along a runnable section to a second gate, then a steep section of stone steps and open fell to a rocky summit. The summit is the only checkpoint; runners are requested to follow the flagged route to and away from the summit. Many competitors descend to the right of the main path, rejoining it near the bottom. The road sections at start and finish will not be closed to traffic but will be marshalled.
Full FRA kit is required and will be checked before registration. Required items listed are waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle and emergency food. Ambleside AC does not allow certain GPS navigation functions in line with FRA rules. The organiser may cancel or postpone the race if conditions are judged too dangerous or if road closures occur.
