Walking Tall 50/25K
Walking Tall is a trail event held at Big Hill Pond State Park in Pocahontas, TN. The course is almost entirely single-track trail with some park road sections and includes notable features such as a fire tower to climb and a swamp boardwalk over half a mile long.
- 50K (31 miles)
- 25K (15.5 miles)
The fire tower is treated as a special feature. Runners who climb to the top and get their bib punched will receive a finishers item plus a special fire tower challenge coin. Runners who prefer not to climb may complete the same number of stairs on the tower's first floor and still be a legitimate finisher.
Course and aid details are published separately for each distance. The 25K has full aid stations at miles 6.5, 9.6, and 12.5. The 50K follows the 25K route until the split, where a drop bag and a full aid station are available, then continues with full aid at miles 15.5 (drop bag), 18.4, 23.0, 26.1, and 27.5.
The event enforces a strict finish time limit of nine hours for the 50K and eight hours for the 25K. The only true on-course cut is at mile 26.1. The organizers do not offer refunds or deferrals; for sold-out races entrants may donate a bib to the park or transfer a bib to another person by contacting the organizer. Year-round camping is available at the park and proceeds benefit charity, with 90% to Big Hill Pond and 10% to the Tennessee Park Rangers Association.
According to Ultra Magazine rating standards the event rates a 3 for elevation change and a 3 for surface. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
