Road Running Event in the Western Cape
The Vlakte Marathon is a road running event hosted by the Langeberg Athletics Club in South Africa. The event features several race distances that traverse the route from Heidelberg towards the coastal town of Witsand. The course follows the R323 road, with all races concluding at the finish line in Witsand.
Available distances include:
- 42.2 km Marathon
- 21.1 km Half Marathon
- 10.4 km Road Race
- 5 km Fun Run
The marathon begins at the Heidelberg High School or Showgrounds, while the half marathon starts at Zoutpan, halfway down the R323. The 10.4 km race commences at Vondeling Primary School. A separate 5 km Fun Run takes place at Witsand Beach. The event is open to walkers and is held under the rules of WA, ASA, and ASWD.
Participants have access to refreshment tables approximately every 3 km along the route, providing water and other refreshments. First aid services and ablution facilities are available at both the start and finish areas. The event uses an electronic timing chip system to record results. Bus transport is available for a fee to ferry athletes between the finish line in Witsand and the various starting points.
