Event Details

The Vertical Mile Challenge is a running event with two distances: a 16-mile race (Vertical Mile) and an 8-mile race (Half Vertical Mile). Both races take place at the Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area in Hiddenite, North Carolina.

Course Information

The course consists of laps on a nearly 2-mile loop. Runners in the 16-mile race complete 8 laps, while runners in the 8-mile race complete 4 laps. The loop begins at the start/finish area, which has an aid station with water, sports drinks, soft drinks, and snacks. The course includes a paved section along the base of the rock face, followed by trails that lead to the "Stairway to Heaven" trail. This segment is a steep, open rock face climb of about a half-mile. After this climb, runners travel about one mile downhill to return to the start/finish line. Bottled water is available at the top of the "Stairway to Heaven" and along the trail.

Registration and Logistics

Registration is limited to the first 175 people. There is no registration on the day of the event. Packet pickup is available on race morning. Runners are encouraged to carry a water bottle. The paved area near the start is suitable for placing a personal drop bag.

Awards

Awards are given for overall male and female finishers in both races. Additional awards recognize the fastest first lap and top finishers from Alexander County. For the 8-mile race, there are no awards for the fastest first lap. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
