Van Buren Popcorn Festival Kernel 5K
The Kernel 5K is part of the Van Buren Popcorn Festival and takes place in Van Buren, Indiana, on State Road 5 in front of the Van Buren Library. The race originated in 1987 with the objective of encouraging participation in a healthy activity while promoting the Popcorn Festival. The event is organized by the Van Buren Popcorn Festival Committee and conducted by volunteers.
The course is well marked, flat, and paved. Organizers provide traffic control and water stations along the route. The finish line is located in front of the Popcorn Festival Grandstand where fruit and drinks are available to participants.
A family registration option is offered for groups of two to four members from the same household. Awards are presented to the overall first place male and female finishers, first place masters male and female (age 40 and over), and the oldest male and female finishers. Age group divisions for men and women include 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and above. The first 50 registered and paid 5K participants receive a free t-shirt.
