Event overview
The United Way 5K on the Runway is a road event held at Lynchburg Regional Airport in Lynchburg, Virginia. The race is a 5 km run and walk open to participants aged 8 and older. The course is described as flat and follows the airport taxiway parallel to the main runway. The event supports the mission of the United Way of Central Virginia.
Registration and participation rules
Registration is limited by a cap and will close once that cap is reached. Prices vary by date and family and club discounts are available during specified periods. Registration fees are non-transferable and non-refundable. Participants must be able to complete the 5K within the event time limit. Participants not reaching 2.5 miles by 38:00 (approximately a 15:00 per mile pace) or judged unable to finish before the course closes will be removed and provided transportation back to the finish. Headphones, strollers, skateboards, rollerblades, bikes, and pets are not permitted on the airport taxiway.
Logistics, awards and accessibility
Packet pickup occurs the day before at Riverside Runners in Lynchburg and on race day at the Lynchburg Airport General Aviation Terminal. All official 5K finishers receive finisher medals. Awards include top three overall male and female, top master (40+) male and female, and top three in each age/gender category. Assisted athletes and pushers register and pay half price each; assisted teams receive a 3-5 minute advance start and reserved parking accommodations.
