Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend : Twizel, New Zealand
The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend is a volunteer-run, two-day multi-sport event held in the Mackenzie Region around Twizel. It combines on-water, mountain-bike and off-road running events and raises funds for local youth sport and community groups.
Event options include:
- 20 km canal kayak (Lake Ruataniwha through hydro canals to Lake Benmore)
- 16 km and 40 km Dusky Trail mountain bike rides (no e-bikes in many categories)
- 10 km and 21 km Pyramid off-road runs (also offered as walks)
- Youth and children events including a 5 km youth kayak, 10 km mini mountain bike, 5 km mini run, and a timed indoor row for youth
The youth kayak uses sit-on kayaks provided by organisers; competitors must supply their own lifejackets and entries are limited. The canal kayak course does not permit paddleboards. A specific category exists for e-bikes on shorter mountain-bike distances. Age categories cover a wide range, and for 2026 an over-65 age bracket was added to most events.
The event takes place across public and private high-country land, including farm paddocks and DOC areas, and supports safety backup and local services with volunteer crews and community groups contributing to event operations and first-aid support.
