Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend
The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend is a multi-discipline community event held over a weekend in Twizel. The program combines three main events across two days: a canal kayak series with adult and youth races, the Dusky Trail mountainbike races, and the Pyramid off-road run which includes walk and mini options. There are also youth and children focused activities.
The event has a long history, originating in 1985 as a half marathon fundraiser for kids sport and evolving into the current format where competitors may enter single events or complete all three to become a Hard Labourer. Registration is handled both online and at the Twizel Event Centre on the days before and during the weekend. Prizegivings are held at the Ministry of Works site in Twizel.
The weekend includes entries and scrutineering for kayak races at Lake Ruataniwha and a range of mountainbike distances on the Dusky Trail. Briefings are held before each event. The schedule spans Thursday through Sunday with registration, race briefings and multiple race starts distributed across those days.
