Turkey Trot
The Turkey Trot is a community prediction run organized by the Finger Lakes Runners Club at Ithaca High School. The course is 5.5 miles and combines paved roads, trails, and grass; shortcuts are allowed. Runners enter a predicted finish time at registration and the results rank participants by how close they come to their prediction. No watches or other timing devices are allowed, and custom race bibs are scanned at the finish for result processing.
The route climbs into Cayuga Heights via a short steep dirt path, descends Remington Road, follows the Waterfront Trail around Stewart Park, loops around Newman Municipal Golf Course, and returns through the bird sanctuary. The course crosses an active railroad track and includes roads open to traffic; course marshals assist with crossings and participants must be alert to trains and vehicles.
The event is free to enter and serves as a fundraiser for Loaves and Fishes of Tompkins County, which provides over 5,000 meals per month. Registration is required and results are calculated from the predicted times entered at registration. Facilities noted by the organizers include parking between Ithaca High School and the tennis courts, bathrooms inside the high school, bib pickup and post race refreshments in the gym, and post race bagels, apples, and cider.
