True West Adventure Race

True West is a team-based adventure race held on New Zealand's West Coast. The event offers multiple race durations, including school events and timed formats of around three hours, six hours, twenty-four hours and forty-eight hours. Courses run across remote and rugged terrain and combine on-foot sections, mountain biking and packrafting.

Races are non-stop and teams navigate using map and compass. A team must complete the entire course with every team member present to receive a ranking. Team performance depends on navigation, team coordination, outdoor skills and sustained physical effort over the chosen race duration.

The organisers measure stages by expected time rather than fixed distance because terrain and elevation greatly affect how long a stage takes. As a guideline, a three-hour race may include mountain biking of about 20 to 25 km and hiking of about 5 to 10 km. In longer races, example guideline ranges include mountain biking of 20 to 80 km, hiking of 9 to 50 km and packrafting of 8 to 35 km spread across multiple stages.
