True West Adventure Race : Haast, West Coast
True West is a multi-day adventure racing event held in remote West Coast terrain near Haast. The program includes Schools, 3-hour, 6-hour, 24-hour and 48-hour races. Teams race non-stop and navigate using map and compass through rugged, natural environments. To receive an official ranking, teams must complete the entire course with every team member present.
The event measures stages by expected time rather than fixed distance, because terrain and elevation change how long stages take. Typical distance and time expectations by race duration and discipline are given as guidelines:
- 3-hour mountain biking: 20-25 km, 1.5 to 2.5 hours
- 3-hour hiking: 5-10 km, 1.5 to 2.5 hours
- 6-hour mountain biking: 20-40 km, 3 to 6 hours
- 6-hour hiking: 9-15 km, 3 to 6 hours
- 24-hour packrafting: 8-12 km, 2 to 4 hours
- 24-hour mountain biking: 35-50 km, 5 to 10 hours
- 24-hour hiking: 12-25 km, 5 to 10 hours
- 48-hour packrafting: 20-35 km, 7 to 12 hours
- 48-hour mountain biking: 40-80 km, 8 to 12 hours
- 48-hour hiking: 30-50 km, 15 to 24 hours
Stages may be split across multiple segments within a race. The course layout, number of stages, and specific challenges vary by edition and location. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
