Tortoise & Hare Trail Race
The Tortoise & Hare Trail Race takes place at Buttermilk Falls State Park near Ithaca. The main course is a 10K plus loop (about 6.5 miles) that uses park trails with varied terrain. Runners encounter the easy Larch Meadow Trail, a semi-technical Bear Trail, and the rolling Treman Lake Trail. The route includes one long, steep climb of roughly 450 feet in under a mile followed by a long downhill to the finish.
A free, noncompetitive 1-mile fun run for children follows the Larch Meadow Trail loop and is not timed. An early start is available for participants who expect to take more than two hours to complete the course; entrants should notify the race director in advance if they plan to use the early start.
Prizes are awarded to top male and female finishers in multiple age groups and to the top three non-binary runners regardless of age group. The event is part of the Finger Lakes Runners Club trail circuit and its results count toward annual trail rankings.
Practical notes: vehicle parking in the park requires a $10 entrance fee or an Empire Pass, and free parking is sometimes possible within half a mile at a nearby shopping area. Facilities include restrooms and a bathhouse with cold showers. Water and food will be available after the race. Trail hazards include uneven footing, mud, insects, fallen logs, and road crossings. No dogs, headphones, or jogging strollers are permitted. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
