The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk
The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk is a Memorial Day event in Malverne, New York, based at Connolly Station on Hempstead Avenue. The course follows the route used for the Village of Malverne Memorial Day Parade and is organized as a tribute to veterans. The event was previously known as Freedom on the Farm.
The event has a fundraising focus. In 2022 two local athletes ran 50 miles around the village to raise money for veterans and first responders. A recent 5K raised $15,000, with donations distributed to American Legion Post #44, the Malverne Fire Department, the Scholarship in Memory of Sgt. Winters of the Malverne Police Department, Paws of War, the Detective Steven McDonald Foundation, and Crossroads Farm. Sponsorships and donations are processed through the Never Stop Running Foundation 501(c)(3) for tax-deductible contributions.
Amenities include a drawstring bag for the first registrants, medals for early finishers, personalized bibs for those who register three weeks in advance, free finish-line photos, refreshments such as protein balls, brownies, bananas and water, restroom facilities at Connolly Station, seed packets for early registrants, and crumb cake from the Malverne Bakery.
Awards combine a small container of organic honey and cash for top finishers, with overall, resident, veteran or first responder, and age-group categories. Bib pickup is handled at the gazebo on Church Street at Reese Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to the Malverne Train Station. Live online and same-day race results and finish-line photos are provided.
