The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk
The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk is a Memorial Day community event in Malverne, New York, staged from Connolly Station at 280 Hempstead Ave. The event honors veterans and follows the annual Village of Malverne Memorial Day Parade route.
Distances:
- 5K
- Fun Run
The course is a two-loop route described as fast and flat. The event offers several on-site amenities including free finish line photos, refreshments (protein balls, brownies, bananas, water), bathrooms at Connolly Station, and race-day treats such as crumb cake. Early registrants receive extras: the first 200 registered get a drawstring bag, the first 200 finishers receive a medal, the first 150 registered receive a packet of native seeds, and runners who register three weeks in advance receive a personalized bib.
Awards combine a small container of local honey and cash prizes. Prize categories include top overall men and women, top Malverne residents, top veterans or first responders, and age-group winners from 14 & under through 70+.
Funds raised support local and veteran-focused organizations. In the prior year the event raised $15,000 distributed among several charities and local causes. The organizers work with a 501(c)(3) partner to make sponsorships and donations tax deductible.
Bib pickup is handled at the gazebo on Church Street at Reese Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Malverne Train Station, beginning one hour before the event start time. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
