The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk
The Memorial Day Freedom 5K Run/Walk is a community road event held in Malverne, New York, on Memorial Day. The event follows the route used by the Village of Malverne Memorial Day Parade and offers a separate fun run in addition to the 5K run/walk. The course is a two-loop layout described as fast and flat.
The event is organized as a fundraiser for local and veteran-related causes. Recent fundraising totals and donations supported American Legion Post #44 for a service dog project, the Malverne Fire Department, a scholarship in memory of Sgt. Winters of the Malverne Police Department, Paws of War, the Detective Steven McDonald Foundation, and Crossroads Farm. The organizers have partnered with a 501c(3) foundation to make sponsorships and donations tax deductible.
Participants who register early receive benefits such as a personalized bib if registered at least three weeks in advance; the first registered entrants receive drawstring bags and seed packets; the first finishers receive medals. Other amenities include free finish-line photos and same-day results, refreshments including protein balls, brownies, bananas and water, restroom facilities at the station, and a crumb cake offering from the Malverne Bakery.
Awards are given to top overall male and female finishers, top male and female Malverne residents, top male and female veterans or first responders, and top male and female finishers in standard age-group categories. Bib pickup is at the gazebo on Church Street at Reese Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to the Malverne Train Station. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
