The Last Cowboy Backyard
The Last Cowboy Backyard is a Last Runner Standing style Backyard Ultra scheduled for November 7, 2026, in O'Neill, NE. The event uses an out-and-back on the Cowboy Trail with each lap starting and ending at the community center. The trail surface is described as very flat and non-technical.
The format follows the official Backyard rules: runners complete 4.17 miles each hour and a new lap begins on the hour. Competitors who are not in the start corral at the beginning of a lap are eliminated. A gong will be sounded to start each lap. Runners receive credit for the total accumulated mileage, which will be recorded on a custom wooden plaque prepared on site.
Event services include indoor and outdoor crew areas, indoor flushing restrooms, and porta potties in the lot. Organizers will provide water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel; all other food and gear must be brought by runners or their crews. Crew assistance is allowed only between laps and is limited to a maximum of three crew members per runner. No pacers, trekking poles, or out-of-area aid are allowed during laps. Littering results in disqualification.
Participants must be at least 15 years old. Runners under 18 require a legal guardian to be present as crew and must sign an additional waiver at packet pickup. The event has a 150 runner cap and lists registration deadlines and deferral policies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
