Event details
The Last Cowboy Backyard is a Backyard Ultra held in O'Neill, Nebraska. Laps start and end at the community center and use the Cowboy Trail as an out-and-back course. The trail surface is described as super flat and not technical, on a crushed or packed surface conducive to accumulating mileage. The format follows the official Backyard rules: each lap is 4.17 miles and laps repeat on an hourly schedule until a single runner remains. Runners receive credit for the total mileage they accumulate during the event.
Rules, logistics and participant information
The event has a 150-runner cap. Crews are allowed but should be limited to a maximum of three people per runner; crew access and aid are permitted only between laps in the designated outdoor crew area or inside the community center. No pacers, trekking poles, or crew assistance is allowed while a lap is in progress. Organizers will provide water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel; all other food and gear are the runners’ responsibility. Facilities include indoor flushing restrooms and porta potties.
All participants receive a tri-blend t-shirt and a custom wooden plaque with accumulated mileage burned on site. The last person standing receives a custom belt buckle; the last male and last female receive acrylic awards. Minimum age to register is 15; runners under 18 must have a legal guardian onsite as crew and sign an additional waiver. The event policy states no refunds and no bib transfers, with a stated credit schedule for cancellations and deferrals. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
