The Last Cowboy Backyard
The Last Cowboy Backyard is a Backyard Ultra held in O'Neill, Nebraska on November 7, 2026. The event uses the Cowboy Trail as an out-and-back course with each lap starting and ending at the community center. Runners complete a lap of 4.17 miles each hour until only one person remains.
The Cowboy Trail route is described as super flat and not technical, which is intended to allow runners to accumulate high mileage. The event has indoor and outdoor crew areas and a 150 runner cap. Runners receive credit for accumulated mileage and will be given custom wooden plaques with their final mileage burned onsite.
Crew and aid are permitted only between laps in the designated outside crew area or inside the community building. Organizers will provide water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel; participants and crews are responsible for other supplies. No pacers or trekking poles are allowed and any aid given outside the permitted areas or times results in disqualification. Littering also leads to disqualification.
Age and registration rules require runners to be at least 15 years old. Runners under 18 must have a legal guardian onsite as crew and sign an additional waiver at packet pickup. The event has a no refunds policy with credits available on a sliding scale and requires withdrawal through the event registration system.
