Event overview

The Last Cowboy Backyard is a last-person-standing backyard ultra held in O'Neill, Nebraska on November 7, 2026. Runners complete repeated out-and-back laps on the Cowboy Trail, a flat, non-technical crushed-limestone surface. Each lap is 4.17 miles and the race continues until only one runner remains. Laps start and finish at the O'Neill community center. The event has a 150-runner cap. Indoor and outdoor crew areas are provided. Finisher items include a tri-blend t-shirt and a custom wooden plaque with each runner's accumulated mileage burned on site. The overall winner receives a custom belt buckle; the last male and last female receive acrylic awards.

Rules, crew and logistics

Crew is allowed and limited to a maximum of three people per runner; additional spectators are permitted but must not overcrowd crew areas. No pacers, no trekking poles, and no outside assistance during a lap are allowed. Crew may provide aid only between laps in designated outdoor or indoor crew areas. Organizers will supply water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel; runners and crews are responsible for other food and gear. There will be indoor flushing restrooms and porta potties on site. Minimum age to register is 15; runners under 18 must have a legal guardian onsite as crew and sign an additional waiver at packet pickup. The event follows standard backyard race rules and disqualifies littering or rule violations. Deferral and credit policies apply for withdrawals.
