About the race

The Goat Adventure Run is an alpine trail event across Tongariro National Park, running roughly 20km(ish) from Whakapapa to Turoa along the Round the Mountain track. The course includes more than 1,000 metres of vertical ascent and traverses lava flows, scoria fields, mountain beech forest, tussock grasslands, alpine herb fields, streams, waterfalls and rocky boulder fields.

The event is self sufficient on course with no aid stations; runners are expected to carry their own fluids and supplies. Organisers require presentation of compulsory gear at registration. Required items include clean dry footwear, thermal long-sleeved top, thermal beanie, thermal gloves, a thermal or survival bag, a whistle, a drink carrying device and a suitable seam sealed weather barrier jacket. Random gear checks occur before the start and noncompliant entrants will not be allowed to begin.

To protect the park and manage the field the event uses staggered wave starts and enforces cut-offs for safety. There is a mandatory checkpoint at 6.3 km with a 1 hour 35 minute limit from each wave start; failure to reach this checkpoint results in being withdrawn and transported back to the start. Registration and event services operate from the Powderhorn Chateau and finish area at Turoa. Bus transport options between Ohakune, Whakapapa and Turoa are available for a fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
