The Gauntlet : November 8, 2025
The Gauntlet is an out-and-back paddle race on the Lower Cahaba River that starts and finishes at the confluence with the Alabama River. The start and finish location is Old Cahawba Archaeological Park, 9518 Cahaba Rd, Orrville, AL. Racers paddle upstream to a turnaround point and then return, contending with the river current and oncoming boats.

Race entries are separated by boat type and by solo or tandem, and by male or female categories. Boat types listed include canoe, surfski, kayak, rec kayak (sit on top), SUP hardboard, SUP inflatable, and OC. Official category placement requires a minimum of three boats; categories with fewer entries will be moved to the next fastest category. Riders entered in the 20 mile race on SUP inflatable or rec kayak must demonstrate race experience or be moved to the 10 mile race.
Entry, fees and awards
Entry fees are $75 per racer for the 20 mile race and $50 per racer for the 10 mile race. Registration closed Aug 5, 2025. All racers receive race swag and a finisher item. First, second, and third place in a category receive special finisher items when the category has at least six entries. There are no refunds except if the race is cancelled. Overall prize money is offered for top three finishers in each distance, subject to a minimum of 30 signups. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
