The Drop - Sheffield
The Drop is a navigation challenge based at Up & Running, Church Street in Sheffield city centre. Participants are taken blindfolded by bus to an undisclosed location and must make their own way back to the event centre without external navigation aids.
Choices of challenge include:
- 10 Mile Drop: dropped about 10 miles as the crow flies with no navigation aids.
- 15 Mile Drop: dropped about 15 miles as the crow flies with no navigation aids.
- 6 Mile Drop: dropped six miles as the crow flies, open only to non-locals.
At registration participants surrender electronic devices, watches, and any navigational aids, and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag to carry for the duration. Blindfolds may be replaced by blackout safety goggles if required; alternatives can be arranged with staff.
Key rules prohibit GPS, unauthorised maps, and any form of transport; activity-recording devices are only permitted if sealed inside the emergency bag. Breaking the seal on the emergency bag, using transport, or using unauthorised navigation results in disqualification. Distances are measured as the crow flies so actual routes will be longer.
An optional live GPS tracking system is available separately. Trackers are said to be accurate within five metres but can be affected by tall buildings and black spots. All trackers must be returned after the event or a replacement fee of £175 may apply. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
