The Drop - Sheffield
The Drop is a stripped-back navigation challenge in Sheffield in which participants are taken to an unknown location and must find their own way back to the event centre. There are no route markers, no directions, and no navigational reassurance once participants leave the drop point.
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. In exchange they receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration; breaking the seal results in disqualification. Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives. When the blindfolds are removed the clock starts and each participant chooses their own route back on foot.
Distances are measured as the crow flies; actual travel distance will be significantly longer. Available options include:
- 15 mile core Drop, longer distance and extended decision making
- 10 mile core Drop, same rules in a shorter format
- 6 mile Drop, open only to non-locals to preserve fairness
Rules prohibit GPS and unauthorised maps, allow only organisers’ maps if provided, and require travel on foot only. Live GPS tracking is offered as an optional safety feature with typical accuracy within 5 metres; trackers must be returned or a replacement fee of £175 applies. The event centre is at Up & Running, 37-39 Church St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2GL. Entry fees range from £35 to £50. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
