Trail Running in the Santa Ana Mountains
The That's No Moon Trail Races take place in the Cleveland National Forest, located in the Silverado area of California. This event features courses set on forest roads through remote sections of the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange County. The terrain is characterized by exposed ridgelines, sweeping vistas of the Southern California wilderness, and significant elevation changes.
Participants can choose from three distinct distances:
- 50 Mile (80.5 km) with approximately 9,440 feet of elevation gain.
- 50K (50 km) with approximately 5,469 feet of elevation gain.
- 30K (30 km) with approximately 2,899 feet of elevation gain.
The event requires self-sufficiency due to the remote nature of the trails. While there are well-stocked aid stations along the routes, runners must carry their own food, clothing, and a minimum of 40oz of water. For safety, participants running after 5:00 PM are required to carry a light.
The 50 Mile race serves as a Sterling Silver Ticket Race for the Angeles Crest 100 Mile. The top two male and top two female finishers in this category earn guaranteed entry into the following year's 100-mile event.
The courses reach a maximum elevation of 4,530 feet. Amenities provided for participants include chip-timed results, gender-specific race shirts, a finisher award, and post-race food. Parking is available at the start and finish location at Blackstar Canyon. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
