Taupō Marathon : marathon course details
The Taupō Marathon is a 42.2 km road marathon that starts on Tongariro Street and finishes at the Tongariro Domain (Great Lake Centre). The route heads down Tongariro Street and Roberts Street before completing two laps of the half marathon course, with an additional loop through the Ngāroto Estate subdivision.
Runners travel out to the airport roundabout, join SH1, continue to 5 Mile Bay and return along the Great Lake Pathway, providing around 10 km alongside the lake and mountain views. At Te Ātea - Tapuaeharuru participants turn and complete a second lap of the same course to the finish.
Aid stations are located at 3.4 km, 7.3 km, 12.4 km, 18.1 km, 21 km, 23.9 km, 27.8 km, 32.9 km and 38.6 km. Stations supply water and R-Line electrolyte, and some offer lollies and fruit. Cups will be available but participants are encouraged to use a reusable bottle, cup or hydration pack; stations can refill these. Toilets are at all aid stations and public toilets are available approximately every 2 km along the Great Lake Pathway. A roving Peak Safety team member provides first aid on course and each aid station carries a basic first aid kit.
All courses are marshalled and signposted and are controlled at major intersections by traffic management with marshals at other crossings. The course is suitable for wheelchairs and all entrants must follow the same course. Dogs are not permitted on course. Children aged 14 and under require prior approval to participate. Walk-category entrants must walk the entire course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
