Southern Rail Trail
The Southern Rail Trail event, organised by Elite Energy, has been postponed to 29 May 2027. The organiser cites increased operating costs driven by fuel levies and supply chain impacts as the reason for the change.
The event offers multiple race distances along the Great Southern Rail Trail:
- 100 km Port Welshpool to Leongatha, individual and teams of 2 and 4
- 72 km Port Welshpool to Leongatha, individual and teams of 3
- 42.2 km Fish Creek to Leongatha
- 21.1 km Stony Creek to Leongatha
- 10 km Leongatha out and back
- 5 km Fun Run Leongatha out and back
- 2 km Family Dash Leongatha
The course is described as predominantly flat and follows the former Great Southern Railway corridor. The route passes historic towns including Toora, Foster and Meeniyan and features restored trestle bridges, old railway stations and heritage markers. The setting is in South Gippsland, a coastal and rural region about ninety minutes from Melbourne, with nearby attractions such as Wilsons Promontory National Park.
A presentation breakfast is planned for finishers of the 100 km and 72 km events. Elite Energy plans to operate pin-free by 2026; participants can purchase reusable BibSnaps as part of entry, buy them at the event, or bring traditional pins.
