Southern Rail Trail – Victoria
The Southern Rail Trail is a running event taking place in South Gippsland, approximately 90 minutes from Melbourne. The course follows the Great Southern Rail Trail, a path developed along a former railway corridor. The terrain is predominantly flat and traverses a landscape of lush forests, rolling farmland, and several historic towns.
Participants cross multiple restored trestle bridges and pass old railway stations and heritage markers that provide a connection to the region's agricultural and industrial past. The route offers views of the surrounding Gippsland countryside and Wilsons Promontory.
The event features a variety of distances:
- 100 km - Individual race or teams of two and four, from Port Welshpool through Alberton to Leongatha.
- 72 km - Individual race or teams of three, from Port Welshpool to Leongatha.
- 42.2 km - Full marathon distance from Fish Creek to Leongatha.
- 21.1 km - Half marathon distance from Stony Creek to Leongatha.
- 10 km - Out-and-back course starting and finishing in Leongatha.
- 5 km - Fun run with an out-and-back format in Leongatha.
- 2 km - Family dash held in Leongatha.
The 100 km and 72 km events include a presentation breakfast for finishers. This event follows a pin-free policy for race bibs; participants are required to use reusable clips or provide their own safety pins. Mandatory gear requirements apply for specific distances.
