Event Overview
The South Mountain Half Marathon is held on the first Saturday in May. The event takes place in Utah along the Jordan River Parkway. The course is a half marathon distance and runs on a trail system, passing parks and Thanksgiving Point, and goes up towards the foothills of South Mountain. The trail is described as more challenging than most paved races due to elevation gain. The start and finish line is at Olympic Park.
Registration Details
Registration is handled online. There are three pricing tiers: Early ($60 until December 3), Normal ($70), and Late ($80 from April 2). Registration closes the Friday night before the race. A code (NOSHIRT) offers a discount for those not wanting a race shirt. A loyalty discount code (HAPPY) is also available for runners participating in multiple events.
Packet Pickup
Packet pickup is available the day before the race at the Salt Lake Running Company store in Sandy. Race day pickup begins at the starting line.
Participant Perks
Registered runners receive a race shirt and a custom, locally made finisher's medal. A post-race breakfast is provided by Great Harvest Bread, featuring items like cinnamon rolls and seasonal breads, along with chocolate milk, orange juice, and bananas. Free, unwatermarked race photos are taken by a professional service and made available for download.
Course and Support
The course is marked with pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals. Aid stations are provided along the route, stocked with Gatorade, water, Honey Stinger products, fruit, and snacks.
Awards
Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers, who receive custom plaques. First-place finishers also receive gift cards. Age group awards (1st, 2nd, 3rd) are given for several categories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
