Sfakia Sky Marathon : From sea to summit

Sfakia Sky Marathon is a mountain marathon held in the Sfakia region of Chania, Crete. The main race covers approximately 44 km with about +3,050 m of positive elevation and about -2,480 m of descent. The route begins at sea level in the coastal area of Loutro, ascends across remote plateaus and mountain paths, reaches the summit area of the Lefka Ori (Pachnes at 2,453 m is cited), and finishes in the village of Anopoli Sfakion.

The course passes the Katsiveli plateau near 2,000 m and traditional stone mitata used by local shepherds. Runners encounter technical mountain terrain, long uphill sections in the first part and extended downhill sections toward the finish. The event includes an initial ferry transfer to the start at Loutro that highlights the village’s isolation from road access.

The Sfakia Sky program also lists other races on the same weekend:

  • 5 km Sfakia Vertical Run with around +680 m gain.
  • 10.5 km Aradena Trail with around +480 m gain.

The organization publishes race regulations, official results from past editions, and a timetable for the competition days. The event emphasizes protection of the local mountain environment and supports a local initiative opposing wind turbines in the mountains.
