Event Overview
The Sandwell Open Water Aquathlon is a multisport event held at Swan Pool in Sandwell Valley. It consists of an open water lake swim followed by a run on paved paths within the park. The event features multiple categories for different ages and abilities, including junior aquathlon races, adult aquathlon distances, open water swim-only options, and a scootathon for young children.
Distances and Categories
Participants can choose from several race formats:
- Junior Aquathlon (Ages 8-16): Distances vary by age category, from a 50m swim / 600m run for 8-year-olds to a 400m swim / 4km run for youths aged 15-16.
- Adult Aquathlon (17+): Options are a 400m swim / 4km run or a 750m swim / 5km run.
- Adult Open Water Swim (17+): Swim-only options of 400m or 750m, finishing at the transition exit.
- Scootathon (Ages 2-7): A non-competitive "training event" where children use a scooter or small bike over a 25m course.
Event Details
The event uses chip timing. A swim hat is compulsory; participants must provide their own or can purchase one at registration. Wetsuits are recommended but not expected to be compulsory, depending on water temperature; shortie wetsuits are permitted. The transition area is in a car park by the lake.
The race age for all categories is calculated as the participant's age on 31 December 2026. Relay team participation may be considered if all members are in the same age category. Participants may choose to only complete the swim segment, finishing at the transition area.
Facilities include portable toilets near the transition area, but there are no changing facilities. Parking is available by the registration area at Swan Pool, with additional parking a few minutes away at Forge Mill car park.
Registration and Fees
Entry fees vary by category and include an early bird discount until 11 June 2026. A British Triathlon "Race Pass" is required for participants who are not members of British Triathlon, with an additional charge of £2 for ages 8-24 or £8 otherwise. There is no registration admin fee.
The organizer offers a full refund (excluding any Entry Central admin charge) for withdrawals made prior to one calendar month before race day. For withdrawals after that date but before entries close, deferral to the following year's event may be considered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
