Sage Burner Trail Race is held at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area in Gunnison, Colorado. The event takes place in early October 2026 and features views of the Maroon Bells, the San Juan Mountains, and the Gunnison Basin. The race area sits near Black Canyon National Park and is characterized by sage brush and a high desert climate.

The course includes sections of technical slickrock, smooth singletrack, and doubletrack. The terrain has rolling hills and short, steep climbs.

The 15K distance is partnered with the Youth Trail Running Initiative, a program aimed at increasing 14- to 19-year-old athlete participation. Place awards are given to the top three male and top three female finishers in each distance.

Logistics and amenities

Registration is completed online with card payment; entry may close early if participant caps are reached. Early packet pickup and race day packet pickup are available at Hartman Rocks Recreation Area (Gold Basin Road parking lot). Event parking is organized near the Hartman Rocks base area; directions from downtown Gunnison follow Hwy 50 to Gold Basin Road.

All participants receive a BOCO Gear race hat, a commemorative finisher medal, and a Hydrapak collapsible reusable cup. Dogs are not allowed on race courses; they may be kept on leash near the start/finish area and must be controlled. A portion of proceeds will benefit Gunnison Trails.
