About the race
Run for Makhanda '26 is a community running event held on Heritage Day at the Ally Weakley Great Field, Rhodes University in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The event features a non-competitive 12 km run intended to bring people together and honour South Africa's diversity.
Participants are encouraged to wear white and use provided colourful body paint to place handprints on each other’s shirts as a visible sign of connection and unity. The event includes a community support component collecting toiletries and hygiene items for boys at Eluxolweni and Ntaba Maria schools. Requested donations for the day include roll-on, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and body lotion or cream.
In collaboration with RUCE and McDonald’s, there are fundraising activities before the event: McDonald’s fundraisers are scheduled for 17 and 23 September 2026, during which meals will help fund hygiene packages for the youth. On the event day, donated items can be brought to the venue for distribution to the schools.
The Morning Run Club organizes the event. Entry options listed are free. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
