About the race
Run for Makhanda '26 is a community run organised by The Morning Run Club to mark Heritage Day in Makhanda at the Ally Weakley Great Field, Rhodes University. The event features a non-competitive 12 km run intended to bring people together, show community support, and honour South Africa's diversity.
Participants are invited to wear white shirts and to place colourful handprints on each other using provided body paint; each handprint is presented as a symbol of connection and unity. The event includes a community donation drive to support boys at Eluxolweni and Ntaba Maria schools. Organisers request hygiene items on the day, specifically roll-on, toothbrushes, toothpaste, or body lotion/cream. In addition, there are two McDonald’s fundraiser evenings on 17 September 2026 and 1 October 2026 where proceeds will help fund hygiene packages for the youth at the named schools.
