Roots, Ridges & Regrets Backyard Ultra
Roots, Ridges and Regrets is a Backyard Ultra held on private trails in the Driftwood community just outside Smithers, BC on September 12, 2026. The event uses a repeating loop format: each yard is 6 km and runners must complete the loop and return to the start before the next hour begins. The race continues yard by yard until only one runner completes one more yard than every other competitor.
The event is limited to 80 runners and is presented by the local run club in its second year. Youth aged 16 and over may participate. One designated yard each day is a family yard where younger children may run with a guardian.
Course location is 6440 Old Babine Lake Road on private forest trails. First aid personnel are on site throughout the event. Music and an emcee are provided through the night. Registration benefits listed for participants include a race kit, sponsor donated swag, a start ceremony, DJ music, and trophies for the winner and the last person to drop. Volunteers support course marshalling, aid station duties, setup and tear down, and receive event swag plus food and drink access.
The inaugural edition drew 46 finishers and the top recorded performance reached 20 yards in 2025. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
