Prairie Dairy 5K
The Prairie Dairy 5K offers an in-person timed 5K trail run or walk and a virtual 5K option. The in-person course is on dirt and mowed-grass trail and is described as hilly and rough. The event takes place at a working microdairy in Oxford, Iowa.
The trail winds through three acres of restored Iowa tallgrass prairie, passes a farm pond, runs near an Iowa nut growers hazelnut test crop and a native Christmas tree plot, and finishes at the dairy barn and arena where music and awards will be held. The organizer provides a prairie identification checklist and a prairie identification challenge; finishers who present the checklist receive a metal that features native wildlife.
Snacks are provided to finishers. Cheese may be available for purchase at the event pending county approval for event sales. Giveaways for the virtual option will be sent after the race; registrations close to the event date may experience shipping or pickup delays, and items for late registrants may be available for later pickup.
The event proceeds rain or shine. The organizer notes this is the first year Connorridge Farms Creamery is selling cheese and states goals of supporting local food from animals grazing on restored prairie and promoting regenerative practices and prairie expansion in Iowa.
