Porkies Wilderness Race

The Porkies Wilderness Race takes place in Porcupine Mountains State Park on the south shore of Lake Superior. The park covers about 60,000 acres and contains over 90 miles of trails, including a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail. The event uses natural singletrack and park trails through forest, along rocky beaches, and past waterfalls.

Distances offered:

  • 50 miles
  • Heavy Half-Marathon (13.1 miles)

The 50-mile course was not designed for ease or speed. Climbs and descents are steep, flats can be muddy, rocky, and rooted, and participants may spend long periods alone on trail at night. Aid stations are provided along the course and organizers offer a printed aid station and course information sheet intended to help runners and crews. Cutoffs are set for each distance: the 50-mile race has an 18-hour cutoff and the 13.1-mile race has a 12-hour cutoff.

Logistics notes included by the organizer mention packet pickup at the Presque Isle Porcupine Pavilion (coordinates 46.7050556, -89.9748611), a required Michigan Department of Natural Resources parking pass for parking within the park that may need to be purchased with cash at the gate, and very limited cell service in much of the park. The organizers have designed longer 100- and 200-mile courses as possible future expansions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
