Porkies Wilderness Races, September 19, 2026
The Porkies Wilderness Races take place in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park near Ironwood, Michigan. The park covers more than 60,000 acres of forest, ridgelines, rocky Lake Superior shoreline, and waterfalls, with over 90 miles of trail including sections of the North Country National Scenic Trail.
The event offers the following distances:
- 50 mile single loop course showcasing the park's most scenic terrain
- Heavy Half Marathon following the final stretch of the 50 mile loop
The course emphasizes scenic and demanding terrain rather than speed. Runners should expect steep climbs, technical descents, muddy and rocky surfaces, root-filled trail sections, remote stretches with limited access, night running in deep wilderness conditions, and long periods of solitude with minimal external noise aside from wildlife and flowing water.
Aid stations will be placed along the route and stocked with traditional ultra fare and hot options. Due to the remote nature of the course, crews and pacers are limited to designated access points only. The event listing notes a need for volunteers at aid stations and for groups interested in hosting trail-side gatherings.
Registration closes Wed, Sep 16 at 11:59 PM CT. Ultrasignup offers optional refund protection at checkout; without it, a race entry rollover may require an 8 hour volunteer shift at the current year's race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
