Porkies Wilderness Races : Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
The Porkies Wilderness Races take place in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park near Ironwood, Michigan on September 19, 2026. The event uses park trails that include sections of the North Country National Scenic Trail and more than 90 miles of existing trail in a 60,000 acre state park with ridgelines, rocky Lake Superior shoreline, and waterfalls.
The event features the following distances:
- 50 mile single loop course
- Heavy Half Marathon following the final stretch of the 50 mile loop
The 50 mile route was designed to showcase scenic and demanding terrain rather than speed. Runners should expect steep climbs, technical descents, muddy, rocky, and root-filled trail surfaces, remote stretches with limited access, night running, and long periods of solitude with minimal external noise beyond wildlife and flowing water.
Aid stations are placed along the route and are stocked with traditional ultra fare and hot options. Because of the remote course layout, crews and pacers are restricted to designated access points. Organizers seek volunteers for aid stations and make volunteer signup available through event channels.
Refund protection is available at checkout through Ultrasignup. If a runner declines protection, the entry rollover option is an eight hour volunteer shift at the current year’s race; no exceptions are allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
