Pilliga Ultra : For Wild Places
The Pilliga Ultra is a weekend trail running event in the Pilliga Forest, scheduled for 18th - 20th September 2026. Organised by For Wild Places, the event combines trail running with community activities and environmental stewardship focused on the Pilliga region.
Race options include:
- PU10km
- PU20km
- PU50km
- Pilliga Ultra Grand Slam
- Kids’ race
- Elders Walk
The event promotes local involvement and cultural recognition, including a Welcome to Country and community-led activities. The program features guided walks, workshops, communal dinners and live music over the weekend. The organisers note generous cut-off times for the PU10 and PU20 events to accommodate hiking as well as running, and training plans are available for each distance.
The Pilliga Ultra has adjusted its funding approach. Runners are not required to fundraise. Ten percent of each race entry will be donated to a For Wild Places managed Pilliga Fund, and any event profits will be split 50/50 between For Wild Places and the Pilliga Fund. The amount distributed will depend on registration and sponsorship revenue.
Base camp is at Pilliga Pottery / Barkala Farm, which offers camping, self-contained and bunk room options. Alternative accommodation is available in Coonabarabran (about 30 minutes) and Narrabri (about 1 hour). The pottery is approximately 10 km off the Newell Highway on a gravel road that can be slippery after heavy rain. More information and registration details for the 2026 event are listed by the organiser. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
