About the race
The Phoenix Phearsome Phour 70K is a continuous out and back ultra route linking the four major summits in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve: Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, and Shaw Butte. The line covers 70.4 km (43.8 mi) with 11,312 ft of elevation gain and loss and requires eight summit hits along the designated trail sequence. Start and finish are located at street parking on 36th Street at Pima Canyon Drive.
The route is formally defined by an official TCX/GPX file and must be followed on the specified trails; side trails that rejoin the corridor are not permitted. The route is unsupported: no supplied aid, no pacers, and no official sweep. Six to seven public water sources are available on the outbound leg and are accessible again on the return, giving 14 access points total; one community-reported fountain at Lincoln and 36th Street is not city-maintained.
Terrain includes steep, technical trail sections and scrambling on Camelback, loose descents on Piestewa, and exposed rocky ridgelines on North Mountain. Vegetation and wildlife hazards include cholla and other cacti, rattlesnakes, scorpions, Gila monsters, javelinas, black widows, and bees. The documented season is October through April; summer conditions present extreme heat and higher risk.
