What is the event?
OUTLAST is a 6-hour trail endurance challenge. Participants complete a 5K trail lap every hour, on the hour. Each lap must be finished within the hour to stay in the event.
Event format
The event consists of up to six consecutive 5K laps. If a runner finishes a lap early, they rest until the next round starts at the top of the next hour. If a runner fails to finish a lap within the hour, they are out of the event.
Course and conditions
The course is trail-based, with natural terrain that can include dirt, rocks, roots, and elevation. Conditions can be unpredictable. There are aid stations at the basecamp with water, basic hydration, and snacks. It is a cupless event, so participants must bring their own bottle or hydration system.
Awards and recognition
All participants receive an OUTLAST t-shirt. Different levels of achievement are recognized:
- Completing 4 laps earns a “Grit Earned” patch.
- Completing 5 laps earns a “Survivor” patch.
- Completing all 6 laps earns a premium “OUTLAST” medal.
The top male and female runners with the fastest combined time for six completed laps win a 1st Place award at the local event. All finishers who complete six laps are ranked on a national leaderboard. The fastest runner across all OUTLAST events is crowned National Champion and wins $1,000.
