Event Format
The Onyx event reimagines a trail race, as participants compete for points rather than for the fastest time. Athletes select and mix routes from five available trails, repeating them as often as they wish within the allotted time. Each route is an out-and-back lap ranging from 0.5 miles to 12 miles roundtrip. At the turnaround point, runners choose to bring back either a flag for standard points or a sandbag for 1.5 times the points value. Wristbands are earned for each completed route.
Race Options
The event offers two timed divisions:
- Onyx (4-hour)
- Onyx Ultra (8-hour)
Location and Logistics
The race takes place at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fort McDowell, Arizona. A separate $7 entry fee to the park is required at the gate, payable by card or exact change only.
A central Points Tent and Recovery Zone serves as the base, where runners can refuel after each lap. Aid stations and a recovery area are provided. The official course map is released two weeks prior, and a race day program is sent one week before the event.
Scoring and Awards
Participants can monitor their score and view a leaderboard after each lap. Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers in each timed category. The event includes finisher swag, a post-race raffle ticket, nutrition from sponsors, finisher awards, and access to free photos and videos.
