Old Tom Backyard
Old Tom Backyard takes place on an active family farm near Blumenort, Manitoba, roughly 25 minutes southeast of Winnipeg. The race corral and staging areas are under an open-sided pole shed that provides shelter for crew and spectators, with room to set up personal tents outside. Some parts of the farm are off-limits for biosecurity reasons and pets are not allowed on the property.
The event follows a Last Runner Standing format with alternating day and night loops. The day loop uses winding treed singletrack and grass pasture trails, while the night loop is an out-and-back on local gravel roads. Key rules require completing each lap within one hour and being in the starting corral at the hourly signal. No support, gear exchange, or pacing is allowed during a loop, aside from brief verbal encouragement when passing. The race is self-supported for food; organizers provide water, ice and a few snacks. Participants must be 18 years or older and the field is capped at 75 runners. Included items listed by the organizer include a custom race T-shirt, access to private trails, a custom medallion, a DNF prize, fuel/snack station, coffee, a swag bag, first aid and volunteer support. Prizes include a Silver Ticket toward the 2026 Team World Championships and monetary awards tied to course and national home soil records.
