Old Ghost Ultra
Old Ghost Ultra is a backcountry ultramarathon held on 20 February 2027 along the Old Ghost Road. The route covers 85 km and includes more than 2,600 metres of ascent, with about 15 km spent above 1,000 metres. The course traverses remote terrain and requires sustained trail running ability.
The race field is limited to 300 competitors and a waitlist will be maintained; a nominal contribution is required to secure a place on the waitlist and is deducted from the entry fee if an invitation is accepted. The 2027 entry fee is $425 and includes return race day transport, aid station support, medical presence, finish line food and drink, and a prize pool. Proceeds support maintenance of The Old Ghost Road and the local community.
Pre race registration and a compulsory briefing take place in Westport on the day before the race at the NBS Theatre. Bus transport to the start line and from the finish to Westport is provided for competitors and is included in the entry fee. The start line is at the northern end of Old Ghost Road near Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge.
Aid stations are located at Specimen Point hut (17 km), Stern Valley hut (42 km), Ghost Lake hut (55 km) and Lyell Saddle hut (67 km). Each station provides water, electrolyte drink, bananas, energy foods and first aid. Competitors must carry specified compulsory gear for the entire race, including a drinking vessel, head torch, seam sealed waterproof jacket and pants, multiple thermal layers, survival blanket and a basic first aid kit. A drop bag service is provided with specified dimensions for nutrition items. Cut off times apply at aid stations and competitors who miss these times will not be permitted to continue.
