About the race
The Old Ghost Ultra is an 85 km backcountry ultramarathon over the Old Ghost Road with more than 2,600 metres of ascent. The 2027 event takes place on 20 February 2027 and the race field is limited to 300 competitors; a waitlist will be maintained and a nominal contribution is required to secure a waitlist place. Entries for 2027 open on 1 June 2026. Aid stations and competitor checkpoints are located at Specimen Point hut (17 km), Stern Valley hut (42 km), Ghost Lake hut (55 km) and Lyell Saddle hut (67 km).
Each aid station includes a first aid presence, water, electrolyte drink, bananas and energy foods; competitors must carry their own drinking vessel(s) because disposable cups will not be supplied. The entry fee for 2027 is $425 and includes return race‑day transport, backcountry aid stations and medical support, finish‑line food and drink, and a prize pool. Drop bag and separate gear transfer services are provided; drop bags must fit the issued race bag dimensions (395 mm × 280 mm, flat envelope style). Compulsory personal kit must be carried for the entire race and will be checked at registration. Minimum items include a drinking vessel, head torch with sufficient battery capacity, seam sealed waterproof jacket and long pants, two thermal long sleeve tops, thermal longs, thermal hat and gloves, survival blanket and a basic first aid kit.
Registration, compulsory gear checks and a briefing occur the day before the race; attendance at the briefing is a condition of entry. A prizegiving takes place the day after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
