Nav Challenge 1 - Comeraghs
Nav Challenge 1 is a navigational mountain event held in the Comeraghs, County Waterford on Sunday 13 September 2026. The event uses an unmarked route over open mountain and commonage with ground cover of heather, peat and some rough trackways. Participants will visit fixed controls marked by orange and white orienteering kites and punch a paper card to record visits. The course does not use continuous route marking and is rated difficult due to terrain, ascent and distance.
The event offers two route options:
- Long course: 15 to 16 km, about 500 to 600 m ascent
- Short course: 8 to 9 km, about 300 to 400 m ascent
Participants must be able to navigate with map and compass. GPS, smartphone and watch navigation aids are not permitted for competitive results; if used to find the way back, competitors must declare this and will receive a non competitive result. The course closes after four hours.
Mandatory Level C kit is required and includes a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL water, emergency food, a map of the area and a compass. Competitors must bring their own copy of the Comeragh map by EastWest Mapping at 1:25,000. Junior entries under 18 years are not permitted.
