Moose Knuckles Adventure Race
The Moose Knuckles Adventure Race is a team navigation event that takes between 8 to 10 hours to complete. Teams of 2 to 4 people travel together and navigate between plotted checkpoints. Some checkpoints are optional so teams can choose which to attempt; teams punch a passport at each checkpoint and must hand it in at the end to qualify for unmanned points.
The race combines three main disciplines: trekking mainly off-trail, biking on gravel, dirt, pavement and quad trails, and paddling on larger Manitoba lakes in canoes or kayaks. Mystery challenges may be given during the race. Knowledge of how to use a compass is mandatory. Only maps supplied by the organizers are permitted and GPS devices are prohibited except for emergency use.
Location and logistics are centered at Eddystone, Manitoba and the West Lake Community Centre, with free rustic camping available. Entry is limited to 20 teams. Fees listed are Early Bird (before March 31) at $125.00 plus GST per racer and Standard price after March 31 at $185.00 per racer. No refunds but transfers are allowed.
Race rules require teams to stay within 50 m of each other, obtain checkpoints in the specified order, wear race bibs and carry mandatory gear, and use required safety equipment such as helmets for biking and PFDs for paddling. Prohibited items include personal maps and use of GPS for navigation. The organizer donates 100% of profits to active living initiatives.
