Event details
The Mines of Spain Trail Races take place at EB Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque, IA, with the start/finish near 8991 Bellevue Heights Rd. The event offers the following distances:
- Half marathon
- 7 mile
- 4 mile
A free Mini-Mines trail race for children ages 12 and under is held during Friday packet pickup. No pre-registration is required for the kids' race; participants must sign in during packet pickup.
Course and aid stations
Routes run on mixed terrain including single and double track, prairie grass trails, rocky technical sections, dense hardwood forest, and bluff climbs with Mississippi River views. Aid stations provide water, Tailwind Nutrition drink (Mandarin Orange, mixed at 100 calories per 12 oz), and basic sweet and salty snacks. There are two manned aid stations and one unmanned station placed at specified mile markers. The event is cup free; runners are strongly encouraged to carry a handheld bottle or hydration pack. The course closes at the four hour mark.
Logistics, registration and policies
Packet pickup occurs on Friday and there is a pre-race check-in on Saturday. Registration is online only; there is no paper or morning-of registration. A waitlist is used when capacity is reached and entries are offered in waitlist order. Deferral and distance-switching rules apply; no bib transfers or refunds.
Awards and conduct
Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers for each distance and to age-group finishers as specified. The race enforces conduct rules and may disqualify participants for littering, course cutting, cheating, or abusive behavior. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
