Marokopa Munter : 21 November 2026
The Marokopa Munter is an adventure race held in the Marokopa area on the west coast of the North Island. The terrain includes hills, rivers, lakes, farms and native bush. The event returns to the seaside village where it began and 2026 is announced as the tenth and final edition.
Race options
- 12 hour race: teams of two, three or four; trekking and mountain biking, optional paddling.
- 24 hour race: four person teams only; packrafting or sit-on-top kayaking option and a non-paddling division.
The format uses rogaine-style sections so some checkpoints are optional and may be visited in any order. Teams have a fixed time limit to collect as many checkpoints as possible and return to the finish. Navigation, route choice and team strategy are important, particularly in the 24 hour race when darkness increases difficulty.
Logistics notes include a registration and briefing on Friday evening at Marokopa Community Hall, and that entries remain open until the week before the event unless capacity is reached. Travel times from regional centres are given as about two hours from New Plymouth and 90 minutes from Hamilton.
Mandatory equipment covers clothing layers, headlamp, survival bag, sleeping bag, PLB and team safety gear. Map scale is NZ Topo50 1:50,000 printed on waterproof paper. School and university students receive a half price entry option using code Student50. Limited Munter merchandise will be available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
