Marató dels Dements

Marató dels Dements is a two-day mountain running event in the Serra d’Espadà (Castellón) that includes a long-distance marathon and a half-marathon. Both races run on mountain trails and paths inside the Parc Natural de la Serra d’Espadà and are organized by Club de Muntanya Dements together with the town councils of Eslida and Aín. The marathon coincides with the Skymasters edition of the Merrell Skyrunner® World Series and follows International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) rules for that category.

The event facts:

• Marató dels Dements: 42.5 km, +3808 m elevation gain and loss.
• Mitja Marató d’Aín: 22.5 km, +2007 m elevation gain and loss.

Both races are technical, semi-self-sufficient mountain events that require experience and good physical condition. Participation requirements include proof of prior finishes: for the marathon, a finish in a 42 km+ race with at least 100 m ascent per km or a previous Marató dels Dements (after 01/01/2023); for the half, a finish in a 21 km+ race with similar ascent criteria or a previous Mitja d’Aín (after 01/01/2023). Minimum ages are 18 for the marathon and 16 for the half.

There are strict cutoffs and checkpoint times on course, mandatory equipment (for example thermal blanket, whistle, minimum 1 L water reserve, windproof jacket with specified rating, mobile phone and GPS device), and rules forbidding headphones. Aid stations provide water and food at listed kilometres; runners must carry their own drinking container. Entry limits are 650 places for the marathon and 350 for the half; standard entry fees are 75€ and 40€ respectively.
