Madder Than a Wet Hen
On July 25, 2026, Willenborg Woods hosts the Madder Than a Wet Hen, a 5K trail race near Charleston, Illinois. The event is organized on private trails at Willenborg Woods and uses terrain on and near the Embarras River.
The route begins on winding forest trails and contains approximately 1,100 feet of elevation gain concentrated into a short distance. A notable one third mile section runs down the middle of the Embarras River and is typically ankle- to knee-deep in July, exposing sandy bars and rocky riffles. The final approach includes the steep climb known as Billy Goat Hill near the finish.
Field size is limited to 125 participants, keeping the event small and community oriented. A post race meal includes pancakes and ice cream. Primitive tent camping is available for an additional fee through the event entry, with porta potties and an outdoor shower provided for campers. Lodging options are available nearby in Charleston, Illinois, and the venue is accessible by car.
