Madder Than a Wet Hen 5K
Madder Than a Wet Hen is a trail race held on July 25, 2026 in Charleston, Illinois at Willenborg Woods. The event is a summertime version of the back half of the Frozen Cock's Crow course and is run over a 5K distance with roughly 1,100 feet of elevation gain.
The course starts on winding forest trails and includes a notable one third mile stretch down the middle of the Embarras River. In July the river is shallow, typically ankle to knee deep, with sandy bars and rocky riffles. The route finishes after a steep climb known locally as Billy Goat Hill.
The field is limited to 125 participants. Registration closes on July 20. Primitive tent camping is available for an additional fee and campers must be set up by dark. Porta potties and an outdoor shower are provided for campers. Several glamping lodging options are listed nearby.
Willenborg Woods describes its mission as creating a relaxed and fun environment in the woods and maintaining its trails. Organizers emphasize that trail running should be both challenging and enjoyable, that access to the woods is important, and that community and family involvement are part of the event experience.
