Mad Max Marathon Running Festival - Broken Hill, NSW
The Mad Max Marathon Running Festival takes place on 26 July 2026 at the Broken Hill Racecourse, about 6 km from Broken Hill’s main street. Races are held on dirt tracks with a desert landscape as a backdrop. Participants should arrange their own transport to the racecourse in advance.
Event distances include:
- Marathon
- Half marathon
- 10 km
- 5 km
- 2 km Kids Racecourse Dash for U12s
Course details: the 5 km follows the Broken Hill Racecourse parkrun course with a short extension. The 10 km adds 1.5 km along a dirt track plus a 2 km lap of the racecourse. The half marathon extends the parkrun course with further dirt-track sections and finishes with a 2 km lap. The marathon is two laps of the half marathon course. Distances may vary because terrain is uneven.
Facilities and support: there are four drink stations on course with cups available and some lollies; runners are encouraged to wear hydration vests or carry refillable containers. A coffee van will be near the start with food and free fruit available. Bibs and pre-purchased T shirts can be collected at the Gary Radford Pavilion on the Saturday before the event or on race day. Personal items can be left in a staffed marquee at the start line. First aid is provided by St John’s with on-site staff and a vehicle.
Prizes and entries: all finishers of the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km receive a Mad Max medal. Trophies are awarded to top finishers in the various events. Late registration is available at the racecourse the day before and on race day with no extra fee. A novelty Mad Max Wheelbarrow Charity Relay for five-person teams is planned on the 2 km racecourse track. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
