Lüneburg Trail Run 2026 : event overview
The Lüneburg Trail Run takes place at the Lüneburg Congregation in Luneburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The event offers multiple trail distances that start and finish at the race village near the Lüneburg church.
- 65 km - Ultra trail, elevation 2400 m, 6 checkpoints, cut-off 16 hours
- 23 km - Mountain trail, elevation 860 m, 4 water points, cut-off 6 hours
- 10 km - Beginner trail, elevation 279 m, 3 water points, cut-off 5 hours
- 5 km - Fun run, 1 checkpoint
The 65 km route is technical and uses cattle trails, rough terrain, 4x4 tracks and farm roads. The route includes a steep ascent to the Ncaga mountaintop with a weather safety check, plateau sections, multiple stream crossings, an extended rocky descent, and a final stretch on a former tar road. Checkpoints are positioned at Koppie Alleen, Paardeplaas, Mandlangampisi Towers, Skodini and Fantastic Turbine; water availability varies by checkpoint.
The 23 km route also begins with a steep climb to the Ncaga mountaintop, includes a checkpoint at about 9 km, a freshwater stream near 16 km for refilling, and smoother final kilometers toward the finish. The 10 km starts with an ascent up Ngaca Mountain but does not go to the summit. The 5 km is a short course intended for children and parents with small children.
The 65 km category requires compulsory gear with time penalties for missing items. Required equipment includes trail running shoes, headlamp, charged phone, GPS with course loaded, waterproof jacket with hood, running pack with 2 L capacity, spare socks, basic first aid and emergency rations among other items.
