The Lost Sheep

The Lost Sheep is a half iron distance triathlon held in and around Kenmare, first run in 2003. The event begins with a 1900 m swim in Kenmare Bay, continues with an 83 km cycle that follows the Ring of Beara, and finishes with a 21 km run through quiet country roads into Kenmare town.

The bike course includes two category one climbs, including the Healy Pass, and the Caha pass with a 150 metre tunnel through Baurearagh Mountain. Riders descend lengthy switchback sections and pass through Adrigole, Glengarriff and the village of Bonane before a mainly downhill return to transition. A recent road resurfacing on one section is noted in the course description.

The updated 21 km run follows undulating country roads beside the River Sheen, turns back toward Kenmare over hilly terrain, and finishes with a final downhill approach into the town centre. Media listings have placed the event among notable middle distance races; one outlet ranked it as the 6th toughest middle distance event and another listed it among the best races in Ireland.
