Event overview

The Lost Coast 55K takes place on January 3, 2026, in Whitethorn, California. The route covers 55K (about 34.3 miles) with roughly 6,500 feet of elevation gain. The start and finish are at the Horse Creek Mountain trailhead parking area.

Course details

The course follows backcountry gravel roads and stretches of quiet pavement. Miles 1 through 8 on Saddle Mountain Road are the roughest terrain and climb to about 3,000 feet in elevation. The route then descends to King Peak Road and continues north; pavement begins on Wilder Ridge Road and continues to a turnaround at the Honeydew store. Honeydew is the lowest point on the course at roughly 300 feet above sea level. The return follows the same roads south, omitting the Saddle Mountain turnoff. Depending on rainfall, a few small water crossings across the road may appear in the final 5 to 10 miles.

Logistics and notes

The easiest vehicle access to the trailhead is from Shelter Cove Road via King Peak Road, which is unpaved but described as wide and smooth enough for most mid-size cars. The start/finish area is primarily a meeting place with limited services. The route is more commonly used by gravel and mountain bikers and sees very light vehicle traffic on King Peak and paved sections. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
