Lamington Classic Trail Run
The Lamington Classic was established in 1970 and is described as Australia’s oldest trail race. The course follows the Border Track through parts of the World Heritage listed rainforest in Lamington National Park, between Binna Burra and Green Mountain (O'Reilly's). The one-way crossing distance has been measured by a steel wheel as 21.3 km. A 42.195 km option is offered as a double crossing; that event starts about 400 metres into the forest to achieve the marathon distance. The usual weekend format includes an overnight at Binna Burra between the Saturday and Sunday crossings.
Distances:
- 21.3 km one-way crossing
- 42.195 km double crossing, starts about 400 m into the forest
Race requirements and safety notes are stated clearly. All 42.195 km entrants must have completed a "Hostile" trail race of at least 30 km. 21.3 km entrants must have completed a road 21.1 km event. Marathon runners must make a compulsory 3 minute stop at the O'Reilly's turnaround; failure to stop results in disqualification. Compulsory kit includes at least 1 litre of fluid for the marathon and 600 ml for the 21.3 km, plus a compression bandage. Water is provided only at the Binna Burra and Green Mountain ends; there are no formal drinks stations between them, and runners must carry their own cup.
The route is a Class 4 track with rough surfaces, exposed roots and rocks, possible muddy sections, creek crossings and steep grades. Tail sweepers are normally 15 to 30 minutes behind the last runner, a qualified first aid person is at the finish, and evacuation from the forest can take several hours. Registration fees are published and include lunch. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
