Klondike Ultra: Fort Assiniboine, Alberta
The Klondike Ultra is a weekend trail running event held within Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park and on private property inside the park, near Edmonton, Alberta.
The event offers multiple distances:
- 6 km Klondike Dash
- 10 km Klondike Rush
- 27 km The Dead Horse
- 50 km Little Klondike
- 100 km Klondike Ultra
Courses begin in the valley bottom on Wierenga flats with a short open-field section before climbing onto an old wagon trail. Runners pass stands of old growth cottonwoods and birch, follow single track that alternates between packed sections and loose sand, and cross moss-covered sand dunes and boreal forest. Steep sandy single-track sections reduce traction on climbs while descents can be fast on packed, curvy trail. Parts of the route follow the original Klondike trail and pass historic features such as a grave site and a trapper's cabin. Several courses run beside Clear Water Creek and along the Athabasca River, with beaver crossings noted near the creek. The described terrain applies primarily to the 50 km and 100 km courses; shorter courses use similar sand, double track and single track on rolling dunes.
