Klondike Ultra, Fort Assiniboine AB
Klondike Ultra is a weekend trail race held in Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park and on adjacent private land. The event offers multiple race distances to suit a range of trail preferences.
Course features include a start in the valley bottom across a wide open field for a few hundred metres, then a climb onto an old wagon trail lined with mature cottonwoods and birch. Steep single track sections run over ancient sand dunes where loose sand can slow ascents while descents can be fast. Above the river valley dunes are covered in moss and boreal forest; the single track is smooth, very hilly and occasionally rooty. Rocks are noted as uncommon, and packed single track sections are fast, curvy and flow through old growth forest.
The Klondike Staging area follows the original Klondike trail and passes a grave site and a historic trapper's cabin. Routes also run beside Clear Water Creek and meet the Athabasca River, with riparian cottonwoods, thick undergrowth and possible beaver crossings.
