The event is organized by Friends of the Shelter, an all‑volunteer 501c3 nonprofit that raises funds for medical care of sick and injured dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center. The organization formed in 2003 and reports that over 95% of donations go to help shelter dogs.
In person activity takes place at Alum Creek State Park Beach in Lewis Center on September 25. A virtual option is available for participants who cannot attend in person; the virtual 5K can be completed between September 23 and September 26. The organizer lists both an in person 5K and a virtual 5K.
Participants receive a soft t-shirt, a swag bag, and a medal. The event includes more than 100 auction and raffle items available online, with some items featured at the September 25 gathering.
