5K for K9s Columbus 2026
The 5K for K9s is an annual fundraiser organized by Friends of the Shelter, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. Entering its 18th year, this event is designed to support the medical care of sick and injured dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center. Because the event is managed by volunteers and supported by sponsors, 100% of the proceeds are dedicated directly to shelter dog medical treatments.
Participants can choose from the following event formats:
- 5K Run/Walk: An in-person 5 km course located at the beach area of Alum Creek State Park.
- Virtual 5K: A flexible option allowing participants to complete the 5 km distance at any location, such as a neighborhood or treadmill, over a multi-day window.
The in-person event at Alum Creek State Park is pet-friendly, and dogs are welcome to join their owners. Pre-registered participants for the physical race receive an event T-shirt, a race bib with a timing chip, and a goodie bag containing items from local sponsors. Post-race refreshments are also provided on-site. Virtual participants receive their T-shirt and goodie bag via mail. Free parking is available for attendees at the beach area lot of the park.
