Julie Hughes Triathlon
The Julie Hughes Triathlon in Sitka, Alaska is a multisport event held at 601 Halibut Point Road. Established in 1985 as a tribute to a teenager who died of cancer, proceeds from the event are donated to the Sitka Cancer Survivors Network. Athletes may compete individually or as part of a team, and a short course is provided for youth participants.
Distances on the adult and youth courses include:
- Run - 5 miles with youth turning at 1.5 miles
- Bike - 14 miles with youth turning at 6 miles
- Swim - 1,000 yards with youth swimming 500 yards
Pre-race assembly takes place at Blatchley Middle School and includes a safety briefing and a moment of silence in honor of the person commemorated. Transition area rules require foot traffic only; riders must dismount before entering or leaving the area and wear a buckled helmet while riding. Swimmers enter the pool through the main entrance, shower before swimming, and check in with the Pool Traffic Manager for lane assignment. Diving into the pool is not allowed.
Entry categories for 2026 show adult individual and relay entries at $40, youth individual entries at $20, and a youth mixed relay team fee at $60. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
