IronHorse - USATF Certified & Sanctioned
The IronHorse event offers multiple running distances on the Wapsi-Great Western Line (WGWL) Trail in Riceville, Iowa. The Full Marathon also uses Minnesota's Shooting Star Trail. All races are USATF sanctioned; the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K are USATF certified.
Distances:
- Full Marathon (Boston qualifier), point-to-point across WGWL and Shooting Star Trail
- Half Marathon, point-to-point on the WGWL Trail
- 10K, out-and-back on the WGWL Trail
- 5K, out-and-back on the WGWL Trail
Course notes specify railroad-level grades on paved trail for most sections, with a four-mile crushed rock segment at the marathon midpoint. Aid stations and port-a-potties are placed along the routes. Finish for all races is at the WGWL Trailhead Welcome Center in Riceville (110 Main Street). Shuttle service is provided for Full and Half Marathon starters; registrants must indicate shuttle use and shuttle reservations are limited by deadlines and availability.
Awards are given to the first three finishers by gender in each race; no age-group awards. All Full and Half Marathon finishers receive a finishers award. Event rules state no strollers and no dogs. Proceeds support nature preservation, trail maintenance and restoration. Health guidance asks unwell individuals or those diagnosed with infectious disease not to attend.
