The IronHorse Races are USATF sanctioned events held on the Wapsi-Great Western Line (WGWL) Trail in Iowa with a portion of the Full Marathon on Minnesota's Shooting Star Trail. The Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K and 5K are offered; the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K are USATF certified. USATF Event Licence ID is #161730.
Distances:
- Full Marathon (Boston qualifier)
- Half Marathon
- 10K
- 5K
Courses run on the WGWL Trail Northern Branch, a Rails-to-Trails recognized paved and concrete corridor. The Full Marathon is point-to-point and also uses the Shooting Star Trail; it includes about a four mile crushed rock section near the midway point. The Half Marathon is point-to-point at the state line. The 10K and 5K are out-and-back on a paved trail with railroad level grades.
Aid stations and port-a-potties are located along the routes. All races finish at the WGWL Trailhead Welcome Center in Riceville. Shuttle service provides transport for Full and Half Marathon starters; registrants must declare shuttle use and no shuttle option exists for those registering after April 15. Registrations are final after April 1 with no refunds, deferrals or race exchanges. The event requests no strollers and no dogs for safety.
Race proceeds support nature preservation, trail maintenance and restoration. The route passes rural scenery including farmland, wind turbines, an oak savanna, a wetland boardwalk and the village of McIntire. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
